The Players Championship starts later today in Florida. The Players Championship is the unofficial 5th major in the season and the course and layout give all competitors the opportunity to shoot a low number and climb the leader board. The golf course is set up in such a way that it offers the whole field the opportunity to win.
Usually modern tour golf is being dominated by the bombers, crushing the golf ball astronomical distances at tour events every week. The course this week is set up differently, accuracy will be rewarded over distance. The tight narrowing fairways at the big hitters landing zones and well positioned doglegs will allow the shorter hitters the ability to compete, as finding the short stuff is the only way to get close to these well-guarded greens, providing a true test of golf.
The 17th hole the iconic par 3 island green has certainly provided a challenge for even the best golfers in the world, with more than 700 balls finding the water over the last 15 years. The wind and conditions cause havoc with club selection and in front of the swooning gallery of fans, the golfer who can hold their nerve and deliver under the highest pressure will claim the victory come Sunday.
